I was not going to write anything about the Vice-presidential debates, but I can't seem to stop myself. I just can't understand how any reasonable, thinking, intelligent person could possibly vote the McCain-Palin ticket!! By golly, I'm not buying that down-home good old girl act for a second, don'tcha know!! And suddenly Main Street has become the hottest topic. Seems Sarah Palin also said something about how people are struggling to live on 42,000 dollars a year....damn, I wish I was one of those struggling middle class main-streeters!! There are actually people in this country struggling and somehow making it on less than 10,000 dollars a year. How they do it, I don't know, but they are.....amazing, huh?
"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending soldiers out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan." --Sarah Palin, on the Iraq war, speaking to students at the Wasilla Assembly of God, June 2008.That is some pretty scary stuff to me. Not that she is asking us to pray for our troops, but that she is saying that God is approving and evidently guiding this war. I thought the idea of God starting a war was what got us where we are in the first place!! (9-11, and all that) Men are responsible for wars, and I kind of think God sets back and says, "Oh good grief, there they go again!!" Seems we want to get religion out of the government, like that separation of church and state thing?, because that gives everyone a right to worship how they please. You know, so the government can't make us all fundamentalists or something. Its all written down in some important document or something, oh gosh, what is that thing called? Damn, oh, yeah, its the Constitution, I think we still have one of those. Its hard to tell these days....
remember reading about this stuff in school, back in the day.....pretty freaky stuff, huh? Of course this does open the door to all sorts of crazy things, like should we have prayer in school, should the words "under God" be in thePledge of Allegiance, things of that nature, but it also opens the door to discussions on these topics, the freedom to disagree. And that is a marvelous thing.
The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is part of the United States Bill of Rights that expressly prohibits the United States Congress from making laws "respecting an establishment of religion" or that prohibit the free exercise of religion, laws that infringe the freedom of speech, infringe the freedom of the press, limit the right to peaceably assemble, or limit the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Religion + violence as you saw I had posted on that topic too. The "channeling" of god is one trick to ask people from asking questions.
Great post Deb! I'm saying that because I totally agree with everything you've written. (If I didn't I would write Shitty post Deb!)
We, in Canada, had our Prime Minister Debate the same night so I watched that one (It was rather fiesty but Canadian politics are quite different than the image the world has of Canadians - our little secret HA) and I taped US VP debate to watch afterwards.
If you've ever watched Canadian politicians go at it or just give a speech for that matter, you will NEVER hear reference to God, religion, or anything even hinting at it because those politicians would be tarred and feathered. They would certainly have to apologize for their idiotic behaviour and believe me we have many idiots in politics here, too. Not only that if their words smacked of religous persecution they would get fired immediately.
Why is that, you ask? It's because it is not in our constitution nor in any other official document except for things relating to freedom of religion or freedom from hate. (I'm paraphrasing)
Palin and others like her remind me of that knucklehead reverend somebody of some holier than thou church and his Jesus freaks. (I sure have a good memory. LOL) and therefore is a dangerous person. "Ain't that right Joe?" If I didn't know she was from Alaska I would think she came from "aw shucks" corn country bible belt. (We have one of those too.)
Our current Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, is an anti-choice, anti-gay marriage, conservative but his promises included that his personal beliefs had nothing to do with his job as PM and never will. He, as a Canadian citizen, had a right to his beliefs. Based on trust we elected him and he's been true to his word. He knows he wouldn't get in a second time.
I realize I'm tooting for Canada on your blog, Deb, and I apologize for that. I really should take these opinions to my own blog but waaaait a minute, I don't have a blog.
I just keep seeing Palin's side-kicks holding one of those "God hates..." signs in front of grieving parents and my blood runs cold.
SJ: Yes, I guess they think that if God thinks its ok, we will blindly follow....
Babzy: Great comment!! I find it a little disconcerting that we in the US do not watch Canadian political debates...what does it say about us that we do not concern ourselves with the political actions of another nation, except perhaps as a footnote on CNN?
Great post, Deb! It's something I would've written on my blog, but was too lazy to do it!
...and I agree about us not putting anything out on the media about the Candaidan debates...the only place I hear anything about Canada and politics is on the blogs..and pretty feisty those Canuks can be!
The news did a number of interviews on the street and discovered that nearly every young person was going to watch the US VP debate rather than our PM debate. Older Canadians were going to flip back and forth or tape one which I did.
People in England, whom we share a Queen with, didn't even know Canada was having elections and were only interested in US politics.
What happens in the USA affects the whole world.
Yes, I'd say we are a fiesty lot of people. When I hear Canadians label their own country and citizens as apathetic, passive, and wimpy just because in general we are fairly quiet folk, I get my back up. I say for crying out loud you hosers read your history books. Read about our role in WW2 particulary in the Netherlands. Our soldiers are dying in Afghanistan.
Just wait until we are called to arms to defend our northern border against Russia and USA looking for oil. 33 million Canucks against 440 million invaders. It will be a tough fight but I think we can do it. LOL
I have to agree. I know plenty of soccer moms and no offense to them but I really wouldn't want them running the country. I really want someone who is way more intelligent than me. but don't get me started.
No, I agree, Canadians are a fiesty bunch.
Babzy, I think people forget that Canada has a prime minister just like England. I remember Pierre Trudeau....now he was a prime minister!!
Mary, I have to agree...if a soccer mom can convince me she has a good handle on foreign policy, and can act like she has some sense, then yeah, she might do. I'm getting real sick of hearing about "Joe Six-pack", too. Like middle class America is made up solely of beer drinking, soccer watching Americans!! Everyone knows its football...;)
